How we work with anxious patients

No surprises. Ever.

If the thought of a dental chair makes your stomach drop, you're not alone — and we've built the visit around that. Here's what you can expect from the moment you walk in.

Sleep dentistry, in-clinic

Sleep dentistry (intravenous conscious sedation), administered in-clinic by a visiting specialist anaesthetist. Available at every My Implant Dentist metropolitan clinic. Suitability is individually assessed.

Hospital general anaesthetic, too

If you'd prefer a full general anaesthetic in a hospital day-surgery setting — or if you're at our Karratha clinic — we arrange that with a day-surgery partner. Available from any of our twelve clinics.

Bring someone with you

A partner, a parent, a friend, a sibling — whoever makes the door easier to walk through is welcome in the consultation room at every clinic.

Written aftercare & an after-hours number

After any sedation or hospital GA, you'll leave with written aftercare and a phone number to call that night if anything isn't right. At every clinic.

A safe ride home, planned in advance

Sedation and hospital GA require a sober adult to take you home. We plan that with you at the pre-assessment, not sprung on you on the day.

AHPRA-registered, across the group

Every dentist at every My Implant Dentist clinic holds current AHPRA registration. The visiting specialist anaesthetist holds separate specialist registration.

Sleep dentistry · available at every My Implant Dentist metro clinic

If you want to sleep through it, you can.

Sleep dentistry (intravenous conscious sedation) means you're deeply relaxed for the appointment — many patients report little recall of the visit, though experiences vary. It's available at every My Implant Dentist metropolitan clinic, administered by a visiting specialist anaesthetist. If you'd prefer a full hospital general anaesthetic — or you're at our Karratha clinic — that can be arranged from any location.

Three in-clinic options, depending on what you need

Option 1 · Mild

Happy gas

Inhalation sedation, breathed through a small mask. Short-lived and wears off quickly. You stay awake and can hear everything — it just takes the edge off.

Option 2 · Moderate

Oral relaxant / sedative

A tablet taken before the appointment — an oral relaxant that settles your nervous system before you walk in. More relaxed than happy gas, and you'll usually remember less of the visit. You'll need someone to drive you home.

Option 3 · A common choice for anxious patients

Sleep dentistry

Sleep dentistry (intravenous conscious sedation), administered in-clinic by a visiting specialist anaesthetist under continuous monitoring. You're deeply relaxed for the appointment; many patients report little recall afterwards, though experiences vary. Offered at every My Implant Dentist metro clinic.

Another option · Hospital general anaesthetic

If you'd rather be in a hospital, we can arrange that too.

Most anxious patients have their appointment at our clinic with sleep dentistry, and that's enough. But if you'd prefer a full general anaesthetic in a hospital day-surgery setting — or if the treatment planned is complex enough that your clinician recommends it — that's another option, arrangeable from any of our twelve clinics. You're admitted for the day, the treatment is done while you're under GA, and you go home when you've recovered.

  • A dedicated anaesthetist looks after you throughout — separate from the dentist doing the work.
  • Longer treatments in one visit — useful if you've been putting off a lot and want it dealt with in a single day rather than over months of appointments.
  • Individually assessed — not everyone is a candidate. Medical history, medications and the treatment planned all matter. We'll tell you honestly if it isn't the right fit.
  • Hospital and anaesthetist fees sit alongside dental costs — itemised in writing before you decide. Private health insurance may contribute to the hospital stay.

How the day works, step by step

Broadly similar whether you're having treatment in clinic or in hospital — the main differences are where you arrive and who's in the room. We'll give you a written day-of plan specific to your appointment.

1
Pre-assessment

A short appointment — in person or over the phone — to go through your medical history, medications, and what's planned. For hospital general anaesthetic, you'll also be reviewed by the anaesthetist beforehand.

2
Arrival

You'll be asked to come in without food or drink for a set window beforehand, and you'll need an adult with you to take you home. For hospital admissions, this is the day-surgery reception.

3
During treatment

Monitored throughout. In clinic, everything is explained as it happens — or not, if you'd rather not know. In hospital under general anaesthetic, you won't be aware of any of it.

4
Recovery and home

A quiet recovery area, as long as you need before you leave. Written aftercare, and a number to call if anything comes up that night. Hospital recovery is supervised by nursing staff before discharge.

Three ways to start

Pick the one that feels doable.

You don't have to commit to treatment — or even an examination — to come in. Choose the visit that feels like the smallest possible step.

A

Just a conversation

Walk in, meet a dentist, see the space, ask anything. No chair. No instruments. No examination. Nothing to sign.

No commitment Nothing to sign
B

A gentle look, if you're ready

A short, extra-unhurried check — mirror only, no poking unless you invite it. We talk through what we see, you decide what, if anything, happens next.

Stops whenever you say Mirror only
C

Sleep dentistry consult

If you already know you want to be asleep for any future treatment, we can start there. A clinician reviews your medical history and talks through the in-clinic and hospital options available to you.

What we see most often

The things you've been putting off.

Most anxious patients come to us with the same short list. Nothing on it is unusual, and none of it needs to happen in one visit.

01

Clean and polish

The reset. A thorough clean, after a long time away or a recent one, depending on what you need.

02

Deep cleans

For patients who haven't had a clean in a while and want to start from scratch. Often split across appointments.

03

Fillings

Tooth-coloured, numbed, and paced. If it's been a while since your last filling, we'll walk you through every step before we begin.

04

Extractions

When a tooth can't be saved, or shouldn't be. Local anaesthetic as standard. Sleep dentistry available in-house at every clinic, administered by a visiting specialist anaesthetist.

05

Dental implants

Replacing missing or removed teeth with a long-term option. A detailed assessment and written plan before anything is agreed.

06

Crowns & root canals

For teeth that need more than a filling. Broken into shorter, spaced-out appointments where possible.

07

Dentures

Full or partial, fitted carefully and adjusted until they feel right. No single rushed fitting.

08

Whitening & cosmetic

Once you're comfortable and the essentials are looked after — if, and only if, you want to.

Sleep dentistry & hospital general anaesthetic: In-clinic sleep dentistry (administered by a visiting specialist anaesthetist) is available at every My Implant Dentist metropolitan clinic. For patients at our Karratha clinic, or anyone who prefers it, hospital general anaesthetic is arranged with a day-surgery partner — from any of our twelve clinics. When you call, we'll walk through which option is likely to suit you and what the assessment process looks like.
The questions we're asked most

If you've been afraid to ask.

These are the concerns we hear from anxious patients, in their own words. If yours isn't here, ring us and we'll talk it through.

What if I panic during the appointment?

First, you won't be the first person to feel that way in our chair. We agree a stop signal before anything begins — usually raising a hand — and we stop immediately when you use it, no questions, no pressure to keep going.

You can pause for a minute, take a longer break, rinse and reset, or end the appointment entirely. Whatever feels right at the time. Ending an appointment early isn't a failure — it's information, and it helps us plan the next one better.

What if I need a lot of work done?

Nothing has to happen quickly. If there's a lot to do, we'll write down everything we've found, price each part separately, and let you decide what to tackle and when. Some patients do one thing, then come back six months later for the next. That's fine.

We'll always tell you what's urgent (if anything) and what can wait. You don't have to say yes to all of it — and you don't have to say yes on the day.

Is sedation safe?

Sedation carries clinical considerations like any medical intervention, and suitability is individual. Before any sedation happens, a clinician reviews your medical history, medications, and the specific treatment planned. If we don't think a particular form of sedation is right for you, we'll say so, and talk through the alternatives.

Sedation is delivered to the current clinical standards required in Australia, with trained staff and monitoring throughout. We're happy to answer specific questions about the process, risks, and recovery at your pre-assessment.

Can I just be asleep for the whole thing?

Yes. Sleep dentistry (intravenous conscious sedation) — where you're deeply relaxed for the appointment and many patients report little recall afterwards — is available in-house at every My Implant Dentist metropolitan clinic. It's administered by a specialist anaesthetist who visits the clinic, with continuous monitoring throughout. You'll need someone to take you home afterwards.

If you'd prefer a full general anaesthetic in a hospital day-surgery setting — or if you're at our Karratha clinic, or if the treatment planned is complex enough that your clinician recommends it — that's another option, arrangeable from any of our twelve clinics.

Either way, suitability is individually assessed. Your medical history, medications, and the specific treatment planned all need to be reviewed before we proceed, and we'll be upfront if one option isn't the right fit for you.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. Bring a partner, a parent, a friend, a sibling — whoever makes the door easier to walk through. They're welcome in the consultation room, and for many treatments, they can stay with you throughout.

If you're being sedated, you'll need an adult to drive you home and stay with you afterwards — so plan that in from the start.

Can I leave mid-appointment if I need to?

Absolutely. You're never locked in. If a procedure has already started and stopping partway would leave something unsafe, we'll explain exactly what we need to do to make it safe to end — and then we'll end it. If nothing's been started, you can simply stand up and go. We'll rebook when you're ready, or not at all. Your choice.

I've cancelled every dental appointment I've booked for years. What's different here?

That's one of the most common stories we hear — and it's why the first visit is a conversation, not an examination. There's nothing to cancel out of in any meaningful sense: no chair, no plan, no treatment on the books. Just a meeting. Many patients find it's the part that was actually holding them back.

If you do need to cancel, you can. We'd rather you come in a month later, ready, than force the day and not come back.

How much will it cost?

The introductory chat is a short consultation. Any treatment afterwards is quoted in writing before it begins — you'll know the full cost before you agree to anything. We're a preferred provider for most major health funds, and we offer payment plans. See the next section for details.

Making care affordable

Payment plans and health funds.

Cost shouldn't be the thing that stops you, and it shouldn't be a surprise. Here's how we try to make the numbers easier.

  • Written quotes before anything begins So you can read it, think, ask questions, and go home before deciding.
  • Payment plans available Through our partnered providers — subject to approval — so larger treatment plans can be spread out.
  • Claims processed on the day For most major health funds via HICAPS — you only pay the gap.
  • Break treatment into stages Do what's urgent first. Come back for the rest when you're ready, emotionally and financially.

Preferred-provider agreements with

  • HBF
  • Medibank
  • Bupa
  • NIB
  • HCF
  • CBHS
  • Smile.com.au
  • Qantas Assure

Preferred-provider agreements with the above funds are in place at many of our clinics. We'll confirm coverage for your chosen clinic when you call, and check your fund's benefits for you before any work begins.

Take the next step

Come in for a conversation. That's all.

No examination, no treatment, no commitment to proceed with anything we talk about. If you leave and decide it isn't for you, that's a good outcome too — you'll know.
